Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to do this attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve here, and reward you when he cometh in the clouds of heaven. (John Wesley).
I realise how often times I have sung hymns in the meeting but there were many moments I could not remember what I have sung. We may get into the act of singing but our hearts may be afar off. The above quote from John Wesley reminds me that our focus must be God. There is a need to exercise our spirit even in our hymn singing. Singing is as much an act of worship as is prayer - honouring Him and proclaiming Him as the king in our lives. In other word, if I do not sing unto Him, I am really dishonouring Him, disrepecting Him. This is quite a reminder for me!
"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name" (Hebrews 13:15, NIV).

Sing a new song to the Lord.At times when it is the most difficult in life, singing songs to God is difficult - but its reward is great.
