Personal Witnessing

I love the story of the Samaritian Woman.

Here is how the story goes:-

One day, Jesus passed by Samaria and came to a town called Sychar and being tired from the journey, he sat down by the well. A samaritian woman came to draw water and below is the conversation between Jesus and her.

John 4:7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"

John 4:8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

John 4:9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

John 4:10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

John 4:11"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?

John 4:12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"

John 4:13Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,

John 4:14but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

John 4:15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

John 4:16He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."

John 4:17"I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband.

John 4:18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."

John 4:19"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.

John 4:20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

John 4:21Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

John 4:22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

John 4:23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

John 4:24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

John 4:25The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

John 4:26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."

John 4:27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"

John 4:28Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,

John 4:29 "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

John 4:30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

Points that touch me:-

1. Jesus spoke to a outcast Samaritan woman and revealed her past. (John 4:16-18)
2. God used this lowly woman to introduce Jesus to her people. (John 4:29)
3. The power of a geniune personal experience - the change in her was so tremendous that her neighbours poured out of their city to seek the Jesus of whom she spoke. (John 4:30)

Reflection: I must learn not to belittle my personal testimony - God can use it to touch the lives of many people. Just need to be simple and faithful - to share His Word in season and out of season.

Idle Word

Matthew 12: 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. In the past, whenever I read this verse, I am very much afraid because I am always guilty of saying many worthless words. However, now I began to see this verse in a different perspective. This verse is meant for our protection, a reminder and also our guiding principle in the way we talk and relate to people because there are consequences in our spoken words. In Proverbs 18:21 we see that Death and life are in the power of the tongue. There is power in our words, it may either bring life or death to the hearer. The Psalmist also knew there are consequences in men's spoken words and thus they sought God's help:- Psalm 141:3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. May this be our prayer : "Let my speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that I may know how I ought to answer every man. Col 4:6

Doing the work of God

As Christians, we desire to please God and would like to do the work of God. However, we may be very busy doing the so called “works” and missed the main point and all the so-called works will not be counted in His sight. In John 6:28 The multitude also asked Jesus the same question, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” In effect, Jesus is revealing to them that there is only one "work" that God now requires and without which no "works" are acceptable in His sight. This work is to take His gift - to believe on His Son. v29 impressed upon me deeply that the work of God is actually all about Jesus Himself, believing in Him whom God sent. I need to live by believing, by receiving, by appropriating God's gift of Christ, in regard to both His person and His work on my behalf. Everything we do must always be in Him, through Him and by Him. Apar...
